The international meeting of collectors of sports memorabilia, which is attended by several dozen dealers from all over the world, will take place from 30 May to 1 June at the Olympik Hotel in Prague.
The event is organised by Olympsport, an association of collectors of Olympic and sports memorabilia. The fair is organized under the auspices of the international association AICO and under the direct mandate of the International Olympic Committee – Foundation for Cultural History.
The Fair is held regularly each year in an AICO member country. Prague was chosen for this year because, among other things, it will be 100 years since the landmark VIII. The fair is regularly attended by more than 100 exhibitors, both from the members of interest organizations of collectors of Olympic and sports memorabilia (philately, badges, medals, posters, flags and other artifacts) associated with AICO, as well as individuals from all over the world.
Visitors thus have an extraordinary opportunity not only to buy valuable rarities, but also to see unique collections that can only be seen in leading sports museums abroad.
The World Fairs of Olympic Collectors have a rich history, dating back to the first edition held in Lausanne in 1994. The Prague event is now in its 28th year. These fairs focus on collectibles related to the Olympic Games and sport in general and have become an important platform for collectors, dealers and fans of the Olympic movement. They celebrate not only sport, but also the culture and history associated with the Olympic Games.
As its name suggests, the Olympik Hotel was not chosen at random to host the themed fair. Built in 1972, the hotel is one of several buildings designed for the planned Summer Olympics to be held in Prague in 1980. However, the capital of Czechoslovakia had to cede the hosting of the Games to Moscow.
Alongside the fair, a number of events related to the history of the Olympic and sports movement are taking place in Prague:
Olympsport as a theme company is part of the Association of Czech Philatelists and is a collective member of the Czech Olympic Academy. For its members it publishes 3-4 issues of the newsletter annually with information about the history and present of the Olympic and sports movement and philately. It organizes regular meetings of members (spring-autumn) with important personalities from the world of sport. It also prepares postal artefacts with sports and Olympic themes.
Collectors know the Olympik Hotel in Prague well. In March, the spring Sberatel fair is held here and in November the Christmas Sberatel fair. The autumn Sberatel fair will take place on 5 – 6 September at the PVA Expo Prague.
